Believing the Right Kind of Lies.

I manage a team of four sales reps at my job. It’s so interesting to watch people progress in their sales skills over time. Some people get it right away; others struggle. My experience so far is those that struggle most are those that don’t come into the job with a solid belief in themselves and their abilities. Those that succeed are those that naturally believe in themselves (whether you think they should or not).

The Kid at Work

I’m working with a young guy on my team right now who’s been with the company around two months. I have never had a harder working rep under my management. From the minute he walks in every morning until he leaves at night he’s talking to people on the phone, doing his best to make that elusive sale. Unfortunately he rarely does.

Why? In a conversation with him yesterday I found the answer - he has convinced himself he won’t succeed. All of his conversations with himself tell him he’s destined to fail. Every call, every ‘no’ is another opportunity to prove himself (and some of the negative people in his life) right about one thing - he’s not cut out to succeed in this job.

You Won’t Prove Yourself Wrong, You Will Prove Yourself Right

The first thing I told him was that he would probably never prove himself wrong. In other words, if he believed with all his mental and emotional energy that he would fail, then he would. The universe or God or whatever you believe isn’t going to prove you wrong just to make a statement. You will get what you ask for and what you believe. It’s that simple.

Don’t Get it Backwards

The second thing I told him was that if he was going to succeed in a commission-based world he was going to have to convince himself to believe something that wasn’t presently true, namely that he is a skilled and productive salesman. I can sum it up like this: Most people want to do it in order to know it, but you have to know it before you can do it. It’s not see in order to believe; it’s believe in order to see.

If you’re a person that wants to Get Jobless, you’ll need to develop this skill. The skill of believing something that isn’t true, yet.

How do you develop that skill? We’ll discuss it tomorrow.
