Top 5 Salary Negotiation Tips

Getting a raise can be a difficult task. Especially if your boss is really intimidating and you find it hard to even ask, let alone demand. So should you just cross your fingers and hope that your hard work alone will get him to notice you and increase your salary? I think not.

Tips to Get Better Pay

1. Timing is important.

The best time to ask for a salary raise is right when you start your job. If you get into a job taking just whatever they give you, they get the idea that you’re willing to accept a lower standard of pay than you may deserve. Make sure you start out getting the amount of pay that your work is worth.

2. Know your work inside and out.

Having a knowledge about what you’re doing that surpasses all others is huge when it comes to getting a raise. It will give you the advantage over other employees, leaving you with even more reason to get a few bucks tacked onto your hourly wage, or perhaps a promotion of some sort.

3. Be flexible.

Plan out what kind of salary you would like to get, the least amount you will settle for, and the maximum beyond what you think you deserve. Do not try to force a small salary range on your boss, because after all, he is in charge and can give you whatever he wants.

4. Make him want to give you a raise.

If you were to go into your bosses office, flop down in his chair, sneeze on his desk, give him a disgusted look, and ask for a pay raise, you may not only get your rear end kicked right out of his office without a raise, but you may get kicked out of the job, having no more income at all. The way you present yourself, your skills, and your proposition says a lot about who you are and whether or not you really deserve a raise.

5. It’s okay to quit.

If your boss refuses to give you a pay raise, or your potential employer refuses to pay you the amount you deserve or that you could even live off of, don’t be afraid to ditch the job completely. If you feel that you could get a better job elsewhere, do not settle for this one just because it is a possibility.

Whether you are getting a brand new job or if you have had one for a while and feel that you deserve more, knowing how to negotiate your salary appropriately with your employer will land you with wages higher than they may have been if you had left it up to fate. You just have to show that you have the talent and motivation to earn the money you make, the ability to get along and agree with your boss, and the ability to choose between a good salary and a bad one. In many aspects, you determine what you get paid.
