Get Into a Business that You Know

One of the friends I respect most has told me he’d never make an entrepreneurial move into a business or industry he didn’t have at least two years of experience with. At the time I didn’t like it because it mean that 1) I couldn’t just fall into any random business and knock it out of the park, and 2) I was going to have to have a job for two entire years before I ventured out on my own. Both of those issues felt way too restrictive.

About four years have passed since he said that to me, and I have to say I agree with him 100%. I’ve spent three of those four years with one company. After my first year in the company I was pretty sure I had the whole business figured out. I’d make lots of suggestions and judgments about how things were going. I was a lot of ego and not much knowledge or experience. And guess what? I was dead wrong on 90% of the things I said about the company.

Two years have gone by since then. I’ve held two more positions and really worked in the ‘guts’ of the business. As of now, I feel like I have the knowledge and experience to not only make intelligent statements about the business, but I also feel I could make a legitimate run at starting a similar one and making a success of it. Something to think about.
